Cheaper tickets for train journeys throughout Slovenia from 11 August

From 11 August, some tickets for travelling by Slovenian Railways passenger trains will be even cheaper. The prices will be significantly lower, especially for those who travel only by train, over distances of more than 20 kilometres, and buy monthly, semi-annual or annual tickets.

A monthly personal flat-rate ticket will thus cost only €65, while the price of such an annual ticket will be €520. All SŽ flat-rate tickets will allow passengers to travel in 2nd class coaches of all trains on the Slovenian Railways network (at no extra cost). Some other types of tickets for Slovenian Railways trains will also be more affordable.

On 1 June 2023, the Ministry of the Environment, Climate and Energy introduced affordable IJPP season tickets valid for train and bus transport. In order to promote sustainable mobility, the Ministry also gave its consent to changes to the Slovenian Railways Passenger Tariff – for all those passengers who need and use only rail transport.

Passengers who only use trains for their journeys will thus have even more favourable travel options from 11 August 2023.

The key changes to the Slovenian Railways Passenger Tariff are:

  • For passengers who travel only by train, ticket prices will be 5% lower than the IJPP single tickets (which apply to both train and bus). For a monthly personal ticket, valid on the entire Slovenian Railways network, a passenger will pay a maximum of €65 (and only €520 for an annual ticket).
  • Weekly, monthly, semi-annual and annual flat-rate season tickets are valid in 2nd class coaches of all trains on the Slovenian Railways network (at no extra cost).
  • Route-specific return tickets for distances over 80 kilometres will change to flat-rate tickets. They allow an unlimited number of journeys throughout Slovenia in one day and are valid for 2nd class of LP and RG trains. The price of a flat-rate return ticket will be €14.
  • The SŽ kilometre scale, which is the basis for calculating ticket prices, will be aligned with the IJPP scale (the interval of travel distances is 5 kilometres). Train tickets will be on average 5% cheaper than IJPP tickets for the same route.
  • The age limit for purchasing child train tickets with a 50 % discount is raised from 12 to 15 years.
  • The ticket for primary school students for an individual school year is valid for the whole year, including summer holidays. This ticket no longer requires a certificate of enrolment, but only an identification document.

There are also several new features in the offer of SŽ season tickets, which allow an unlimited number of journeys throughout Slovenia and are valid for 2nd class coaches of all types of trains:

  • The weekly ticket for distances over 40 kilometres will change from a route-specific ticket to a flat-rate SŽ ticket. The ticket will cost €32.
  • The monthly return ticket for distances over 20 kilometres will change from a route-specific ticket to a flat-rate SŽ ticket. The price of a personal ticket will be €65 and a non-personal ticket will cost €85.
  • The semi-annual ticket for distances over 20 kilometres will change from a route-specific ticket to a flat-rate SŽ ticket. The price of a personal ticket will be €325 and a non-personal ticket will cost €425.
  • The annual ticket for distances over 20 kilometres will change from a route-specific ticket to a flat-rate SŽ ticket. The price of a personal ticket will be €520 and a non-personal ticket will cost €680.
  • Train tickets for primary school students will also be cheaper. The monthly personal ticket for distances over 20 kilometres will also change from a route-specific ticket to a flat-rate ticket. The ticket will cost €32.
  • The semi-annual primary school personal ticket for distances over 20 kilometres will change from a route-specific ticket to a flat-rate ticket. The ticket will cost €160.
  • The annual primary school personal ticket for distances over 20 kilometres will change from a route-specific ticket to a flat-rate ticket. The ticket will cost €256.
  • The weekly personal ticket and the monthly one-way personal ticket will no longer be issued.

SŽ tickets will be available for purchase at the new prices and conditions of the revised Passenger Tariff from 11 August 2023.
