Besides the Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport, an increasing number of Slovenian passengers use nearby airports in Italy, Austria or even Germany. Most often they travel to foreign airports by car, even though this involves additional costs. Another option for travel to airports is train travel, especially if the train takes you directly to the airport entrance. From Slovenia, you can take a train to the airports in Trieste, Vienna, Graz, Munich and Frankfurt, which are most popular when flying to distant places. Leave your car at home, buy a train ticket and take an affordable and comfortable ride to the airport!
You can travel to the Venice airport from Trieste. Take the SŽ-Arriva shuttle bus, or travel from Ljubljana to Trieste by a direct train. At the Trieste railway station, transfer to a train to Venice and leave the train at the Venezia Mestre station where you can take the bus (opposite the train station) to the Venice airport, which is only about 8km away.
The fastest way to reach the Trieste airport (Ronchi) is by taking a direct train running between Ljubljana and Udine. When headed to the airport, leave the train at the Trieste Airporto station. You can also travel to Trieste by the SŽ-Arriva shuttle bus.
The best access point to the Graz airport is the main railway station in Graz – Graz Hauptbahnhof. The station is connected with the airport by a bus service. Another option is to transfer to a local train at the Leibnitz (Lipnica) railway station, as local trains also stop by the airport, located directly beside the railway line between Maribor and Graz.
Graz is well connected with Slovenia by train routes. Prices for train travel are affordable, especially as regards the Regio AS offer. In this case, you can purchase a single ticket allowing you to combine your travel to the airport with a bus service. More information on this is available on the Graz airport website (www.flughafen-graz).
You can make a return journey from Ljubljana to Vienna via Celje and Maribor with six trains a day. Trains from Slovenia take you to the Vienna Main station (Wien Hauptbahnhof) from where you can reach Vienna International Airport quickly and easily. The railjet train service serves Vienna International Airport via Vienna Main station twice an hour. Further information on airport services can be found on the airport website www.viennaairport.com.
You can reach the Munich airport by train from Ljubljana via Jesenice and Salzburg. Between Ljubljana and the Bavarian capital six commuter train pairs operate each day with three direct connections, one of them being the Lisinski night train with sleeping compartments.
At München Hauptbahnhof passengers have to transfer to the S-Bahn city train line 1. The airport can also be reached with the S-Bahn line 8. If you take the line 8, you have to exit the train to Vienna at the München Ost station, which is on the way to the main railway station. City trains run very frequently and the ride to the airport takes about 40 minutes.
A rich offer of the Frankfurt airport can be found at www.frankfurt-airport.de. There are two railway stations directly beside the airport. The first one is for local trains and the second one is intended for long-distance train traffic, where also high-speed ICE trains stop. A train ride from Ljubljana to the Frankfurt airport takes about 10 hours, depending on the selected connection. There are more available connections, the most affordable being daily trains with an evening arrival to the airport or night trains with a morning arrival.
Plane and train
You can also choose to travel part of your journey by plane and continue by train. When you arrive at your selected destination by plane, you can continue your travel by train, for which you have already purchased your ticket at home. An interesting offer in this case would be an InterRail ticket, which allows you to make some sightseeing or stay in a certain country longer. From the Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport, you can take a direct plane to e.g. Scandinavia, Greece, Spain, or United Kingdom. For every individual country there is a wide range of InterRail offers, which are no longer intended only for young people, but for passengers of all ages. Prices depend on your age and the number of days you intend to travel by train. Still, this is the least expensive way for learning more about a desired country.
When you decide to make a plane journey, have in mind also the possibilities of travelling by train. More information on timetables and prices is available on our website. We also recommend inquiry at our InfoCentres at railway stations in Ljubljana, Celje, Maribor and Koper.
