Affordable train connections to European airports

Ljubljana Airport, Slovenia’s main international airport, is a popular choice for starting your journey by plane. However, thanks to good connections and offers, more and more air travellers from Slovenia have been choosing to fly from airports in Austria, Italy, Croatia or even Germany.

One of the most convenient ways of travel to airports is train travel, especially if the train takes you directly to the airport entrance. From Slovenia, you can take a train to the airports in Trieste, Venice, Zagreb, Vienna, Graz, Munich and Frankfurt, which are most popular when flying to distant places.

Buy your train tickets early, leave your car at home and take an affordable and comfortable ride to new adventures!

Trieste Airport

One way to reach Trieste Airport is by taking the train running between Ljubljana and Udine. When headed to the airport, leave the train at Trieste Airport – Ronchi dei Legionari station, which is next to the airport. However, if you still have time before your flight departs, you can get off at Trieste Centrale station and then transfer to one of the many trains to Trieste Airport. More information on connections to Trieste Airport can be found here.

Venice Airport

The fastest way to get to Venice Airport is to take the train from Ljubljana to Trieste. At Trieste train station, transfer to one of the many trains to Venice and leave the train at Venezia Mestre station where you can take the bus (opposite the train station) to Venice Marco Polo Airport, which is only about 10km away.

Zagreb Airport

Travel to Zagreb from just €9 in a comfortable and convenient manner with direct trains running four times a day. From the main railway station Zagreb Gl. kolodvor there is only a 10-minute walk to the Zagreb bus station where you can take a bus to Zagreb Airport. More information on bus connections and timetables can be found here.

Graz Airport

Travel to Graz Airport either by taking a train from Slovenia to Spielfeld-Strass train station where you can take a suitable S-Bahn regional train which will take you to the airport, or travel to Graz (Hbf) train station where you can take a bus to the airport. In this case, we recommend purchasing a single Regio AS Graz +101 ticket allowing you to combine your travel to the airport with a bus service. More information on connections to Graz Airport is available here.

Vienna Airport

You can travel to Vienna from Ljubljana from €27.90. Get the lowest fares by buying your tickets in advance – up to 6 months before your trip. Once you arrive at Vienna Main Station (Wien Huptbahnhof), transfer to one of the many trains that will take you to Vienna International Airport. Further information on all connections to the airport can be found here.

Munich Airport

Take an international train from Ljubljana and change to the S-Bahn city train line 1 at München Hauptbahnhof. The airport can also be reached with the S-Bahn line 8. If you take the line 8, you have to exit the train at München Ost station, which is on the way to the main railway station. City trains run very frequently and the ride to the airport takes about 40 minutes. More information on S-Bahn timetables is available at www.s-bahn-muenchen.de, while details on access to the airport can be found here.

Frankfurt Airport

There is a direct international train connection from Ljubljana to Frankfurt and vice versa running daily. From Frankfurt (Main) Hbf train station, Frankfurt Airport can be reached either by local or high-speed ICE trains. Details on how to get to Frankfurt Airport by train can be found here.

Continue your journey by Interrail

Once you arrive at your destination by plane, you can continue your journey and further explorations by train. For this purpose, we recommend purchasing one of the Interrail Passes available to passengers of all ages. You can choose between the Interrail One Country Pass, which is available for travel within the country of your choice, or the Interrail Global Pass, which allows you to travel on the railway network of all the members of the Interrail offer. Ticket prices depend on your age and the number of days you intend to travel by train throughout each country. More information on Interrail offer is available here.

When you decide to travel by plane, consider the train too. Travelling by train is sustainable. According to the European Commission, rail transport accounts for 0.5% of greenhouse gas emissions from transport, compared to 72% from road transport.
