Train types in the timetable

There are different types of trains operating on the Slovenian Railways network (the word “train” refers to an individual train journey).

They can be identified according to their respective code on the timetable (ICS, IC, EC, MV, EN, RG, MO and LP / LPV).

InterCity Slovenia (ICS)

Trains equipped with SŽ 310 “Pendolino” units feature tilting technology, higher speed, and comfort. They have shorter travel times and fewer intermediate stops. ICS trains operate on the Ljubljana – Maribor route and vice versa. Some ICS trains offer catering services (bistro) on weekdays (Price list of drinks and snacks). The ticket fare includes supplement for travel on higher‑type trains.

InterCity (IC)

Trains that operate over longer distances in domestic and international traffic, connecting major cities, economic, and tourist centers. They have shorter travel times and fewer intermediate stops. The ticket fare includes supplement for travel on higher‑type trains.

EuroCity (EC)

International trains that operate in international traffic on main lines, connecting important economic and tourist centers in Slovenia and Europe. Some trains also offer catering services (restaurant car). The ticket fare includes supplement for travel on higher‑type trains.

International trains (MV)

MV stands for trains operating international services with fewer stops. The ticket fare includes supplement for travel on higher‑type trains.

EuroNight (EN)

Long-distance international trains which run at night, and include sleepers and couchette cars. The ticket fare for international destinations includes an EN supplement for the use of bed or sleeping berth. Moreover, similar to EC, an EN supplement is paid for a seat in a standard carriage when travelling inland. Some EN trains which run across Europe operate under special international tariffs with mandatory seat reservation. The ticket fare includes supplement for travel on higher‑type trains.

Regional (RG) and local passenger trains (LP or LPV)

These trains connect Slovenian towns on shorter and longer routes. Supplements are not required to travel on these trains.

Crossborder train (MO)

A cross-border (“maloobmejni”) train is equivalent to a local passenger train and connects stations across the national border.

Train designations in the timetable

The type of train is indicated by an abbreviation (LP or LPV/RG/MO/ICS/IC/EC/MV/EN) in the timetable.

The designation BUS in the timetable indicates that due to track work, a regular replacement bus service is organized in the current timetable.
