Can I buy the ticket on-board the train?

Yes. Tickets for travel in Slovenia can also be purchased on-board. However, if you get on a train without a ticket at a station where ticket facilities are available, you will have to pay a penalty fare of €5 if asked to do so by the ticket inspector. This does not apply if there was no ticket office at the station at which you began your journey or if the ticket office was closed.

On board the train, ticket purchases can only be made in cash or by VALÚ.

If you are unable to purchase your ticket elsewhere than on board the train, we recommend that you have an amount equal to the ticket price ready to purchase your ticket. In the event when staff are unable to give you the correct amount of change, they will issue a receipt which you can exchange for cash at a train station ticket office.

Slovenian Railways train tickets for travel throughout Slovenia can also be purchased online or in the Grem z vlakom mobile app. The app can be downloaded from Google PlayApp Store andHuawei AppGallery.

Do I have to pay extra charges if I buy my ticket on-board the train?

How much do I have to pay on board a train if I don’t have a ticket?

If you refuse to have your ticket inspected, show invalid tickets, fail to inform the ticket inspector in case you do not have a ticket, or occupy additional seats, you will have to pay the ticket fare for the route concerned together with a penalty fare of €50.00.

The penalty charge is also applied if a passenger in any way obstructs the work of the ticket inspector.

Where can I buy a ticket if I want to travel abroad?

If you wish to travel to another country by train, you can purchase a ticket for an international journey at our InfoCentre offices at train stations in Ljubljana, Maribor, Koper and Celje, at any major station with an international ticket office, and at certain third party rail ticket retailers (travel agencies).

Can I cancel or change a low-cost ticket for an international journey?

Unfortunately, low-cost tickets available under the so-called global fare system cannot be returned or changed.

What kind of discounts to train travel do you offer?

There is a wide range of discounts depending on your age, status, how many people you travel with, and what day you travel on. There are also special offers and event promotions available during various public events, exhibitions, and sales promotions, which are typically time-limited.

Am I eligible for the family discount?

The family discount applies when a child under 15 inclusive and at least one person over 15 are travelling together. Note that up to 5 passengers can travel together (including at least one child under 15) to be eligible.

Up to what age do children travel for free?

How much does a ticket for a child cost?

Children aged 6 to 15 inclusive, as well as children under 6 years of age which require a seat (school or day care groups) get a 50% discount on all First Class and Standard Class tickets in Slovenia. For travel by a higher type train, a supplement is payable.

If you are aged 15 to 26, you are eligible for the SŽ youth card, which gives you 30% off rail fares throughout Slovenia and 50% off rail fares for cross-border trains to Croatia.

Can I get my money back if my train is running late?

To claim your rights, you must present your ticket for validation at the point where the service disruption or train delay occurred. If you have an e-ticket, you must obtain a train delay note from the train accompanying staff. If there is no ticket office open at the station when the train is stopped, present your ticket to the train accompanying staff for validation before leaving the train to exercise your rights.

Can I change a train ticket I won’t be using?

Yes. You can change unused tickets, provided you do so before the start of the validity period specified on the ticket. Tickets purchased at ticket machines, online or via the mobile app are non-exchangeable.

Can I get a refund on a ticket I didn’t use?

You can request a full refund of the fare paid:

  • Before the ticket expiry date, except for tickets purchased online or via the mobile app, for which the fare is non-refundable;
  • A refund on a partially used ticket can be requested for semi-annual and annual tickets that are still within their validity period;
  • Partial refund is also possible in the cases specified in Regulation (EU) 2021/782 on rail passengers’ rights and obligations, the Uniform Rules concerning the Contract for International Carriage by Rail (CIV), General Conditions of Carriage and Special Conditions of Carriage of the Carrier, the Carrier’s Passenger Tariff (PT) and Road Transport Act (ZPCP-2).

Unused tickets for international journeys are refunded in line with the applicable tariffs and regulations on international rail passenger transport. Any unused or partially used tickets for international journeys first need to be validated before a refund can be made.

When you cannot get your money back for an unused or partially used ticket at the station ticket office concerned, you can instead send a refund claim to our Refunds department at the address SŽ-Potniški promet, Oddelek za reklamacije, Kolodvorska 11, SI-1560 Ljubljana.

Can I get part of my money back if I only travelled one direction with my return ticket?

A refund for a partially used ticket may be requested for semi-annual and annual tickets that are still valid, in accordance with point 418.2 of the Passenger Tariff.

Partial refund is also possible in the cases specified in Regulation (EU) 2021/782 on rail passengers’ rights and obligations, the Uniform Rules concerning the Contract for International Carriage by Rail (CIV), General Conditions of Carriage and Special Conditions of Carriage of the Carrier, the Carrier’s Passenger Tariff (PT) and Road Transport Act (ZPCP-2).

Refunds for unused or partially used tickets can be made at the ticket offices indicated in the Passenger Tariff (ST 700.03) or published on the Carrier’s website, and through the Carrier’s competent service on the basis of a K-99c fare refund form.

Ticket offices where tickets are sold by contract vendors shall refund the fare and supplements paid only for tickets purchased at their ticket offices.

Unused tickets for international journeys are refunded in line with the applicable tariffs and regulations on international rail passenger transport. Any unused or partially used tickets for international journeys first need to be validated before a refund can be made.

Where can I get a proof of purchase for the ticket I bought?

You can receive the proof of purchase for your ticket at any station ticket office.

A train ticket also serves as a receipt. However you can always request a proof of purchase free-of-charge when buying train tickets or other sales forms. It is a good idea to carry your pass for the current month with you at all times.

What kind of season tickets can I buy?

You can purchase a season ticket (pass) for seven days, a month, six months, and a year. You can choose between a standard pass, which is available to everyone and typically used for commuter travel, and school pass. The latter is used by students in elementary and high school, university (college) students, and by students in apprenticeship. Certain school passes are also subsidised under the relevant subsidised travel scheme of the competent ministry.

However if you just wish to travel throughout Slovenia by train as much as you want, you can simply buy a flat rate pass for unlimited First Class and Standard Class travel across the Slovenian rail network.

Where can I buy a season ticket?

The first purchase of a season ticket (pass) is made at a station ticket office, where you will receive a contactless rail card which the season ticket of your choice is loaded onto.

If you already have a contactless rail card, you can purchase your season ticket also on-board the train without incurring a penalty fare, but only if there was no ticket office at the station at which you began your journey or if the ticket office was closed.

What is a subsidised pass?

A subsidised pass is a concessionary rail pass available at a discounted (subsidised) price under the relevant concessionary scheme of the competent ministry. Subsidised passes are issued in line with the Rules on Subsidised Transport and the Road Transport Act – ZPCP-2G.

Where can I get the form to apply for a subsidised travel pass?

You can fill out and print the subsidised travel form at the website of the relevant ministry, or simply complete it online on the eUprava portal.

Where can I buy the monthly subsidised pass?

Rules and regulations on subsidised travel can change with every new school year, so make sure to check our website for eligibility and other relevant information.   

What do I need to have with me when buying a subsidised pass?

When you are purchasing a new subsidised pass, make sure to bring with you a valid personal document, a completed and validated application form for subsidised travel, and the contactless card from the previous school year.

If you do not have the contactless card, you may purchase one over the counter at a station ticket office.

When does my monthly ticket expire?

A monthly ticket for a given route is valid from the first day of the month up until the first business day of the next month. Saturday is not considered a business day. You need to be a holder of a contactless card in order to buy a monthly ticket. You can purchase it up to seven days in advance before the next month.

I lost my subsidised pass. Can I get a duplicate?

Yes. If you lose your subsidised pass, a duplicate is issued free of charge, however you have to buy a new contactless card, onto which the pass is loaded.

How do I get an event discount on my train ticket?

If you are going to an event by train, you can receive a discount on your fare, provided the event is included in our special offer. For the discount to be valid, simply show your event ticket when buying the train ticket.

Most event tickets (for events organised by Eventim) are also available at our InfoCentre offices at train stations in Ljubljana, Celje, Koper and Maribor.t

How much do I have to pay to take my bicycle with me on the train?

To take your bicycle with you on the train, you need to pay a flat-rate charge of €1.50 (€3.00 for an electric bike), irrespective of the distance travelled.

Do I need to pay a charge if I want to take my pet with me on the train?

Animals that are kept in an enclosed basket, cage or pet carrier and dogs up to 30cm in height can travel with you free of charge. Dogs which exceed the free allowance require a ticket at half the standard fare for Standard Class.

What discounts are there for groups of passengers?

Groups of passengers under 26 years of age are entitled to 50% off regular fare for travel in the 1st or 2nd class of a local passenger train.

Groups of passengers over 26 years of age are entitled to 30% off regular fare for travel in the 1st or 2nd class of a local passenger train.

How to travel by train if I am a person with limited mobility?

We will do our best to ensure that your journey is as comfortable and enjoyable as possible.

How can I find out if my train is running late?

Real-time data on train delays can be found on our website, with information updated every six minutes, and in the Grem z vlakom mobile app (‘Delays/obstacles’ tab on the bottom right). Information on delays can also be obtained at train stations, ticket sales outlets, Infocentres and by calling our toll-free number 080 81 11.

Passengers are advised to check if their train is running on schedule before making their journey.

Can I get a train delay note for my school or employer?

Yes. If your train was running behind schedule, you can request a train delay verification from the train conductor (ticket inspector) who was present on the delayed train, at a station ticket office, or at the InfoCentre.

To claim your rights, you must present your ticket for validation at the point where the service disruption or train delay occurred. If you have an e-ticket, you must obtain a train delay note from the train accompanying staff. Can you alert me so I don’t miss my station?

If you are travelling in a sleeper train, the train staff will alert you 30 minutes before the arrival to your destination. On other trains, passengers need to make sure on their own that they don’t miss their stop, such as by falling asleep. A good way to prevent this is by setting the alarm on your mobile phone.

Can I charge my laptop computer on the train?

Yes, charger/power outlets are available in ICS 1st Class, on all Stadler trains and on certain international trains. The same also applies for mobile phones.

Are there any restrictions on the use of computers on the train?

While there are no specific rules on the use of computers on board, you must always make sure that using a laptop does not disturb other passengers. The same also applies to the use of mobile phones.

Can I take my pet with me on the train in Slovenia?

Yes. You can travel together with small animals which are kept in an enclosed basket, cage or pet carrier, or which are able to travel on your lap, such as small/lap dogs. No additional charges are payable for animals which meet these conditions. When there is a rail replacement bus service on a specific route, pets cannot be transported.

Can I take my pet with me on an international train?

Whether you can bring an animal to an international journey depends on the rules applied by train operating companies you will be travelling with. While there are some similarities between Slovenian regulations on accompanied animals and the allowances in other countries, train operators abroad nevertheless tend to have different restrictions about what animals you can and cannot take on their trains, in particular when it comes to sleeper services. It is therefore a good idea to do some research before taking your pet on an international train.

How much luggage can I take with me on the train?

There are no specific restrictions when it comes to luggage and its dimensions. As a rule of thumb, you can bring luggage that can be placed beneath the seat or on overhead racks, or carried on your lap.

Is my bag too big to take with me on the train?

If your luggage is not suitable for transport in the passenger compartment or if you bring bulky articles, they are stored in a separate luggage compartment at a flat-rate charge of €5.00, regardless of the distance you travel. 

How can I tell which trains permit bicycles?

Can I take a bicycle trailer with me on the train?

Yes. Bicycle trailers can only be transported together with the bikes. Two bicycle tickets are issued (one for the bicycle and one for the bicycle trailer).

Where do I report property that was lost abroad?

You can report your lost luggage at a station Lost Property Office or to the staff on the train where the loss occurred.

What does organised group travel mean?

If there are six or more of you travelling together, you can get a group discount on your train tickets. How much you’ll be able to save on your ticket fare depends on the age of the passengers travelling in the group. More information on group travel can be found here.

How can I arrange a school trip by train?

If you wish to organise a train trip for a group, you need to make a group booking by e-mail to [email protected]:

  • At least two business days in advance for groups between 6 and 50 people;
  • At least 8 business days in advance for groups of over 50 people.

Subject to seat availability, a larger group of people may not be able to board if the journey was not booked.

Can I book a charter train, and under what conditions?

You can book a charter train service for both inland and international journeys. Orders for inland charter trains should be sent to [email protected] at least 15 days before your planned trip, while international journeys can be booked at [email protected] at least 60 days in advance.

When ordering a charter train, make sure to include information about the planned number of passengers, journey route, date of travel, train type, a draft timetable, and the planned stopping points.

Motorail

On which routes can I take with my car with me on the train?

In Slovenia, there is one motorail service (a special train which carries accompanied cars) operating between Bohinjska Bistrica, Most na Soči and Nova Gorica.

Can I buy tickets with my credit card?

You can buy a ticket with Maestro, Mastercard, Active, Diners, Karanta and Visa, but the purchase can only be made at station ticket offices and at ticket machines.

You cannot use payment cards to buy tickets on-train from the ticket inspector. 

On board the train, ticket purchases can only be made in cash or by VALÚ.

If the ticket office at the boarding station is open, a penalty fare (€5) must be paid when buying a ticket on board.

What is the lowest sum I can pay with my credit card at a ticket office?

There is no lower limit in payments.
