Pets are welcome on Slovenian Railways trains.

Small domestic animals

Passengers can transport small domestic animals on Slovenian Railways trains free of charge. These animals must be confined in cages or baskets that can be placed as personal luggage. Small dogs are also allowed if they can be held in a passenger’s lap. Small domesticat animals are welcome on all trains, including ICS trains, when confined in cages or baskets, and small dogs when held in a passenger’s lap.

Larger Dogs

Large dogs (over 30cm in height) on trains are required to wear a muzzle, be kept on a short lead and sit or lie on the floor. Large dogs travel at a half 2nd class fare in domestic traffic and a half fare according to the international tariff on international routes.

Large dogs are not allowed on ICS trains due to limited space, with the exception of guide dogs accompanying blind or disabled individuals.

Additional Information

Upon boarding the train carriage, passengers accompanied by large dogs must obtain consent from their fellow passengers. If your fellow passengers do not consent to the presence of your pet, then you should contact the train conductor or a member of the rail staff onboard who will take care of the animal for the duration of the journey.

In sleeping cars and cars with berths and beds, dogs are only allowed if the passenger occupies the entire compartment – in other words, if you have booked the entire compartment.

Animals are not permitted in the buffet car onboard any train service.

In the case of bus replacement services on a particular route, transport of domestic animals is not possible.

Pet Transport Abroad

Conditions for the transport of animals abroad are mostly the same as in Slovenia. However, elsewhere in Europe the transportation of pets in sleeper cars and couchettes may be subject to different restrictions, depending on the rail carrier. Therefore, we recommend you obtain detailed information on conditions of carriage in individual countries prior to starting your journey.

In Croatia, dogs are not allowed on the tilting trains on the Zagreb-Split route.

Animals are not to be transported to and from Norway, Finland, United Kingdom, Northern Ireland, Irish Republic, Spain (except dogs in sleeper compartments), Morocco and Portugal. In Germany and Belgium dogs can be transported but must wear a muzzle and be kept on a lead..
